Why did we create the House of St John’s?
Many may think that the House of St John’s was just created to provide Bath with an exclusive work and event space. In reality, the House was established to support the removal of the limitations faced by members of our community. Societal change is at the heart of everything we do.
What is societal change?
Well, a business with a social purpose has the enduring determination of creating a better world. It is an engine for good, creating social benefits by the very act of conducting business. Its growth is a positive force in society.
The House helps facilitates change by donating 100% of profits to our charity partner, St John’s Foundation, to better the lives of disadvantaged children in Bath and North East Somerset.
In 2020, the charity established the Foundation Fund which was designed specifically to help children from pre-birth to twelve years old. Focusing on providing nutritious food, safe spaces outside school, additional foundational support with reading, writing, oracy and literature, as well as emotional and behavioural support; the fund targets the most disadvantaged children living in Bath and North East Somerset.
Through working closely with St John’s Foundation we are able to support the charities and organisations they work closely with, in June we opened our rotating gallery to the local charity We Get It to exhibit its Scars for Life project.
These beautifully shot images bring together individuals who are proud of how their bodies have withstood rigours cancer treatment, celebrating living well with and beyond cancer. It is an honour to have such a powerful collection of images in our building to share with the community. If you would like to showcase your art as part of our rotating gallery, please contact us at hello@hosj.co.uk.
How can your organisation join the societal change revolution?
The additional benefits of social purpose are far-reaching for many organisations. As well as benefiting communities, it helps widen audiences and gain higher customer and employee engagement. A report by Deloitte found that 73% of people working in a purpose-driven business are more engaged.
For organisations considering adopting a social purpose strategy, we recommend first considering what your core values are and how they can be used to benefit your community. This does not have to be through funding schemes or product donations. There are other options such as mentoring programmes or using your company platform to stand behind causes that are important to you or educating your audiences on issues.
So, how do I get involved at the House?
Whether you hold an event or host a meeting with us, take a private office or enjoy the freedom of our co-working packages, all profits go directly to charity.
